Strong contrasting colors, decorative use of line, and pattern created by repetition make this piece unmistakably Islamic in origin. However, in this painting the artist has chosen a looser approach to balance and symmetry in order to simulate a play of light and shadow across the leaves. The abstraction of plant and flower forms to create a decorative pattern is an identifying characteristic of Islamic art and manifests itself internationally in the form of the arabesque.
